Learn to Emulate a Professional — Robert Gárdos with Sir Motion AI

One of the main ideas behind Sir Motion AI is something I have believed in for many years: if you want to improve, one of the best ways to learn is to watch, study, and try to emulate someone who has already mastered the movement.

That is exactly what I want to demonstrate here with my good friend Robert Gárdos.

Robert is not simply a very good table-tennis player. He is one of Europe’s accomplished professionals. Robert was born in Budapest, Hungary, in 1979 and began playing table tennis at a very young age. His father, Gábor Gárdos, was a table-tennis coach, so Robert grew up around the sport. He later represented Austria internationally and became one of the leading European players of his generation.

During his career, Robert reached a world ranking as high as Number 18. He represented Austria at four Olympic Games — Beijing 2008, London 2012, Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020. He won the European Men’s Doubles Championship with Daniel Habesohn in 2012 and again in 2018, and he was an important member of the Austrian team that won the European Men’s Team Championship in 2015.

That is why Robert is such an excellent professional for a Sir Motion AI user to study and emulate.

But I want to make something very clear. The purpose is not to turn every player into an exact copy of Robert Gárdos. Every person has a different body, age, strength, flexibility, timing and playing style.

What Sir Motion AI can help you do is study the important mechanics that make Robert’s movement so efficient and then compare those mechanics with your own movement.

When I watch Robert demonstrate his forehand topspin, the first thing I want you to notice is that he is not simply swinging his arm at the ball. The movement begins with the whole body.

Watch his ready position. Watch his legs. Watch his hips. Watch the rotation of his torso. Watch where his elbow is positioned. Watch the path of his forearm and racket. Then watch how all those movements come together at the moment he contacts the ball.

This is what I want Sir Motion AI to help you recognize.

Robert prepares behind and below the incoming ball. He uses his legs, hips and torso to help generate the stroke instead of trying to create all the power from his shoulder and arm. As his body rotates, the racket travels forward and upward through the ball.

That combination is very important. He is not simply lifting the racket straight upward. He is moving through the ball.

When Robert is playing against backspin, he begins lower and uses a greater upward component because he must overcome the backspin and lift the ball. Against topspin or a ball that already has forward energy, the stroke can travel more forward and requires less upward lifting.

This is exactly the type of difference Sir Motion AI should eventually be able to identify.

As you record your own stroke, I want the app to allow you to compare yourself with Robert. How low did you prepare? Did you bend your knees? Did you transfer your weight? Did your hips rotate? Did your torso rotate with the stroke? Was your elbow in the proper position? Did your racket travel forward as well as upward? Where did you contact the ball? Did your shoulder do too much of the work? Did you recover quickly after the stroke? And did you return to a balanced ready position for the next ball?

These are the kinds of details that separate simply hitting a ball from understanding the mechanics of a professional stroke.

Another important lesson from Robert is efficiency. A good stroke does not have to be an enormous movement. In fact, unnecessary movement can slow you down and put unnecessary stress on your shoulder, back and other parts of your body.

Robert demonstrates how the legs, hips, torso, arm and racket work together. That coordinated movement allows the player to produce speed and spin without forcing everything through one part of the body.

This becomes particularly important as we get older. I am 78 years young myself, and one of the principles behind Sir Motion AI is that good movement should not only help you perform better — it should help you move intelligently.

Good biomechanics matter. Efficiency matters. Balance matters. And avoiding unnecessary stress on the body matters.

So when you use the Robert Gárdos comparison inside Sir Motion AI, I do not want you simply asking: “Do I look exactly like Robert?”

Instead, I want you asking: “Am I using the same important principles that make Robert’s stroke work?”

That leads to another very important part of my Sir Motion AI concept. I believe we should eventually give the player two different measurements.

The first should be a Mechanics Score. That tells you how well you are performing the important fundamentals of the stroke.

The second should be a Pro Similarity Score. That tells you how closely your movement resembles Robert Gárdos.

Those are not necessarily the same thing. For example, you could have very good mechanics while still performing the stroke somewhat differently from Robert.

You might receive a Mechanics Score of 88 percent and a Robert Gárdos Similarity Score of 67 percent. That would tell you: “You are performing a fundamentally good stroke, but your movement does not yet closely resemble Robert’s.”

As you improve, perhaps those numbers become a Mechanics Score of 94 percent and a Robert Gárdos Similarity Score of 89 percent.

Now Sir Motion AI is doing something much more useful than simply showing two videos side by side. It is teaching you what to look for.

This is what I call learning by emulation.

Watch the professional. Study the professional. Record yourself. Compare the movements. Understand the differences. Make an adjustment. Try again. Improve one movement at a time.

Robert Gárdos spent a lifetime developing these movements at the highest levels of international table tennis. With today’s technology, my goal is to give ordinary players the opportunity to study movements like Robert’s in a way that was never available to us when I first learned this game.

You do not simply watch the professional anymore. You can try to move with the professional. You can compare yourself with the professional. And most importantly, you can learn from the professional.

That is what I want Sir Motion AI to become: Watch. Emulate. Compare. Understand. Improve.

Pályafutása során a világranglista 18. helyéig jutott. Négy olimpián képviselte Ausztriát: Pekingben 2008-ban, Londonban 2012-ben, Rióban 2016-ban és Tokióban a 2020-as olimpián.

Figyeld a lábait. Figyeld a csípőjét. Figyeld a törzs forgását. Figyeld a könyök helyzetét.

Áthalad a labdán.

Behajlítottad a térdedet? Átvitted a testsúlyodat? Elfordult a csípőd? A törzsed együtt fordult az ütéssel? Megfelelő helyen volt a könyököd? Az ütőd előre és felfelé is haladt? Hol találkoztál a labdával? Túl sok munkát végzett a vállad?

Segítsen intelligensebben mozogni is.

Fontos a jó biomechanika. Fontos a hatékonyság.

A második a Profi Hasonlósági Pontszám.

Figyeld a profit. Tanulmányozd a profit. Vedd fel saját magadat. Hasonlítsd össze a mozgásokat.
